ABOUT ME

Karin Chiu is an acclaimed theatrical set and costume designer from Hong Kong. Her work has been featured in television, film, and theatre productions. She is best known for her unique ability to blend Chinese and Western aesthetics together in order to create a new type of art that transcends cultural boundaries.

EXPERIENCE

STAGE PRODUCTION

Karin carried away the Silver Medal Award in the “Costume Design” category at the prestigious “World Stage Design 2005 – An International Exhibition of Set, Costume, Lighting and Sound Design” for her creative work on the productions “Pinocchio” and “Journey to the West”. She was also chosen to represent Hong Kong at the “Prague Quadrennial 2003 – The 10th International Exhibition of Scenography and Theatre Architecture,” one of only four Hong Kong designers selected for that honour.

MOVIE PRODUCTION

Karin’s unique flair and creative vision have enhanced countless productions. Her recent projects include the head dress design of “Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame” (film), “Happy Home 2012” (film), the armour designs for “Mu Lan” (film), and “An Empress and the Warriors” (film), costume design for “Mu Lan” (dance), costume and image direction for the Chinese TV dramas “FengChuanMuDan” and “ShangShuFang”  and so on.

AESTHETIC AND TECHNICAL CONSULTATION

Karin’s creative vision not only applies in design but also has applicated in aesthetics and technical consultation of theme park and festival productions and management. Her projects include the costume material application on costume props and craftwork development: Rhythms of Rio Parade, “Night Of Adventure” (Chimelong Ocean Kingdom), Chimelong Ocean Kingdom day parade, RWS Musical “Lightseeker” and Hong Kong Vienna Music Festival.

EDUCATION

Karin as holding a Master of Arts degree in East/West Theatre Studies, Karin has been a Panel Member of the Career Oriented Curriculum Programme for Hong Kong Secondary Schools, appointed by the Hong Kong Council for Academic Accreditation. Karin graduated set and costume design from the Hong Kong Academy of Performance Art. She understands being a lifelong learner is a trait that is really important to her, and she knows that a good education is not just for the schoolyard. Some lessons were learned in the traditional way, while others she has received from professional mentors, industry professionals, and in some cases, friends and family.
